Medicine Mural
Client: The HOUSEPitality Family Group
Location: Casa Del Barco, Chesterfield Town Center, VA.
Date: January 2019 - September 2019
Installation Specs: Regionally inspired Mexican restaurant and bar, to feature 450 square-foot hand-painted acrylic mural encompassing two stories. 8 different sections including room for elevator, and wrap-around components on first floor (into restrooms and kitchen) and second floor (into second-floor dining area). 3 months of planning and collaboration. 15 days to install.
Client Requests: Maia was asked to incorporate inspiration from and represent all 7 regions of Mexico. Inspiration was to be drawn from Mexican food and culture, from modern to ancient. The design was intended to actively engage the observer to witness and investigate the details that make up the entirety of each panel. The design was to pay homage to Our Lady Guadalupe. The paint was completely infused with Maia’s prayers, intentions, frankincense and myrrh.
Notable Features:
Jaguar: Revered throughout Mexican culture. Features fish and lime eyes, agave nose/ears, plantain mouth and taco chin. An homage to Our Lady of Guadalupe in the belly. Celebratory gourd crown at client request.
Golden Eagle: Sacred bird in Mexico, includes Maya symbolism in the wings (including seven directions).
Silver Bears: Revered extinct ancient bears (mother Silver Bear and baby to illustrate legacy through depiction).
Medicine: Earth, heritage, beliefs, customs, culture.
